Mohd. Rafi |
I was born in an era when Hindi film industry was prospering thanks to its popular music. The meaningful words of the lyricists, the melodious tunes by the music directors, and the songs sung by some of the greatest singers in the Hindi film industry left me spellbound, and singing became my passion. I never had time to formally learn singing, but it has been my favorite hobby. Now, after retirement, I have attempted to sing some of my favorite songs in my own voice. Hope you enjoy.

Na kisi ki aankh ka noor hoon
Mohd. Rafi |
न किसीकी आंख का नूर हूँ, न किसी के दिल का करार हूँ;
जो किसीके काम न आ सके, मैं वो एक मुश्त -ए -गुबार हूं
Neither the light of anyone's eye, nor the solace of anyone's heart;
I am but a useless handful of dust.
This song is written by the last Mughal Emperor of India, Bahadur Shah Zafar. He was a serious poet and an accomplished ghazal writer. Later in life, his rule did not extend past the Red Fort and he was banished to Burma after the 1857 war of Independence. He is supposed to have sung this shayari in his durbar in self-pity and expressing his failure as a ruler. This song is from the 1960 film Laal Quila. It was sung by Mohammed Rafi, and the music is composed by S. N. Tripathi.
जो किसीके काम न आ सके, मैं वो एक मुश्त -ए -गुबार हूं
Neither the light of anyone's eye, nor the solace of anyone's heart;
I am but a useless handful of dust.
